HOW TO SOLVE CATEGORIZATION/CLASSIFICATION QUESTIONS FOR IELTS READING?

HOW TO SOLVE CATEGORIZATION/CLASSIFICATION QUESTIONS FOR IELTS READING?

This IELTS Insider post will provide you with some of the simplest tips and tricks for answering classification or categorization questions.

As the question title suggests, you must match the Names, Dates, or Locations that will be provided on the list above or below the questions. It is similar to the 'selecting from a list' question kind, however there are more questions than options in this question type. It means you can use options several times. For example, if you are given four questions but only three answers, the answer to the remaining one question will be the answer that you have already picked for one of the other three questions.

So, what are the tips to get a hang of this question type.

1. It is best to read the passage first and then answer the questions.

2. As you are aware, you are unable to tackle any issues in IELTS without knowledge of paraphrases. It also applies here. It is preferable to evaluate the options then prepare for any paraphrases.

3. Next, go over the statements in each question.

4. Once again, paraphrasing will come in handy here because you will need to reword the words in the question. You should also consider the various synonyms for the vocabularies utilized.

5. Then comes the phase where you have to find the answer. You should have already gone through the sections by now and should have made a general concept of where the information is located, in your head. Scan the passage for the section that you believe matches the statements given, or locate the alternatives (which is actually easier).

6. It is not advisable to choose and write down options hurriedly. You should first confirm and be certain if it is the only place you obtained the information or the option because in many circumstances, the alternatives and the information are identical and students jot down the answer without confirming. First, look for the keyword you chose in other areas of the essay. This is due to the fact that the same name, location, or information appears multiple times throughout the paragraph. As a result, confirm first!

7. It is also a good idea to tackle this type of question through the process of elimination.

8. Reading instruction is the finest way to learn that you can select any choice more than once.
